While many in the community were returning home after the Seder meals and Sefira, Shomrim’s dedicated Yom Tov patrol units were out in full force around 4:30 a.m., ensuring the safety of residents walking through the neighborhood in the early hours.
During their patrol, one of the vehicles noticed a suspicious individual tampering with a moped. The man appeared to be working on the chain, attempting to break it. Recognizing the clear signs of a theft in progress, Shomrim volunteers immediately alerted other Yom Tov patrol units and quickly notified the NYPD.
Before officers could arrive, the suspect managed to get the moped running and attempted to flee. Shomrim Yom Tov patrol units followed from a safe distance, relaying updates to the NYPD in real time.
When officers attempted to stop him, the suspect ditched the moped and took off on foot. Shomrim patrol units kept eyes on him while NYPD officers gave chase. After running for about a block, the suspect came to a stop and was placed under arrest. The moped was confirmed to be stolen.
