Two suspects were arrested by the NYPD with the help of Shomrim after a hit-and-run on a marked police vehicle in the 62nd Precinct. The suspects fled toward the 66th Precinct after striking the NYPD car.
After the incident, NYPD Aviation was deployed to assist in tracking the fleeing vehicle but temporarily lost visual contact. Shomrim volunteers were activated by the NYPD to assist with the search of the vehicle and shomrim quickly picked up an eye on the vehicle after it was parked and left unoccupied. Shomrim volunteers established a perimeter and created a frozen zone to contain the area.
The low-hovering helicopter seen by residents in the area was part of this active search effort, as NYPD Aviation circled closely overhead while coordinating with officers and Shomrim on the ground. Many residents had expressed concern about the chopper flying unusually low, unaware it was connected to the ongoing hit-and-run investigation.
During the search, Shomrim volunteers observed another suspicious vehicle with two individuals inside. NYPD units were dispatched, and upon arrival, officers confirmed that the individuals were the suspects connected to the earlier hit on the police vehicle.
The NYPD thanked Shomrim for their great work, quick coordination, and pickup on the vehicles and suspects even after the suspects tried to flee the area.
