A store burglary on Motzaei Shabbos was solved in less than 24 hours after a coordinated investigation by Shomrim volunteers led to the suspect being located and stopped by the NYPD.
Late at night motza shabbos, a passerby walking along the street noticed shattered glass from a storefront window and immediately called the Shomrim hotline to report the suspicious scene.
Shomrim volunteers quickly responded and discovered that a perpetrator had smashed the front store window to gain entry. Once inside, the suspect emptied the register and stole a large amount of cash before leaving the area.
Volunteers secured the location and began working to contact the store owner, who was not yet aware that the burglary had taken place. Shomrim maintained the scene until the NYPD arrived.
At the same time, Shomrim’s IT team began reviewing surveillance footage from the area. Through careful analysis, volunteers were able to follow the suspect on camera until he entered a vehicle that had been parked on a nearby side street and drove away. Shomrim documented and secured key evidence for investigators.
Less than 24 hours later, a Shomrim volunteer on night patrol picked up eyes on the suspect’s vehicle and immediately alerted other shomrim volunteers on patrol. Shomrim followed the vehicle as it rolled around the local streets here in Boro Park, where the suspect appeared to be looking around for another opportunity to break into a store.
Shomrim quickly notified the NYPD, who responded and stopped the vehicle.
The suspect was arrested by the NYPD with the help of Shomrim for breaking into the store and stealing cash.
Shomrim reminds store owners not to leave money in cash registers when closing their businesses for the day, especially over weekends, as empty registers significantly reduce the incentive for break-ins.
