A driver who fled the scene after striking a mother and child was arrested after crashing his vehicle several blocks away.
The incident began at the intersection of Coney Island Avenue and Webster Avenue, where the suspect hit two pedestrians and drove off. EMS responded to treat the injured mother and child while Shomrim volunteers canvassed the area for the vehicle. Witnesses described the suspect’s car as a black SUV with visible damage.
At the scene of the hit-and-run, a piece of the SUV’s bumper was left behind. Shomrim volunteers used this crucial evidence to match the damage to a vehicle they spotted during their search. Keeping visual contact, they immediately notified the NYPD.
As the driver continued recklessly swerving through traffic, he ultimately lost control and crashed into a fire hydrant several blocks away.
Officers arrived within minutes and took him into custody. He was charged with fleeing the scene of an accident that left two people injured and driving while intoxicated.
